Francis Friday

I must confess to being one of those who generally welcomes a Friday. It’s just become ingrained with me to regard it as the day on which the mundane can be put aside, that which makes me most anxious put aside, the grind of meeting the demands and expectations of others put aside, and a time of self indulgent pleasure welcomed in, even if only for two short days. None of the last sentence bears any resemblance to my life now, nor as it has been for the last thirty years, but the feeling of warmth towards Friday remains.

The days of going out on a Friday night and getting ingloriously drunk are long passed. My working week has for decades now been shaped by myself. If anything, the weekend is harder work because, even though my circumstances prevent me from teaching on a Saturday or Sunday now, I have no help with James’s care and spend my time looking after his many complex needs (this is a privilege generally, not a chore and the former was no complaint, only an observation). And yet, that feeling of celebration at the arrival of Friday remains, as I am sure it does for many of you too.

BUT CELEBRATE! Friday’s have just got better still! Not only shall you be blessed by the wonders of the weekend, but from this Friday forth it is my intention to release onto my website a newly crafted treat for your delectation and entertainment. Perhaps only a humble blog, perhaps a painting or drawing, maybe a new song, or even an orchestral work of such enormity that it will take you all of your precious weekend to listen to from beginning to end, but a new “something” each Friday it shall be my endeavour to provide. And with these tidings of great joy I shall conclude my post. Watch out for something new next FRANCIS FRIDAY!
